Autumn Curried Roasted Parsnip Soup Recipe

Curried Roasted Parsnip Soup - Pikalily Food Blog

While we are still enjoying the mild weather, the shorter evenings and cold nights are a reminder that winter is just around the corner.  With this in mind we will be starting to share more soups, stews and casserole recipes over the coming months.  To kick things off, we thought we’d share one of our favourites – an autumn roasted parsnip soup.  For those of you who enjoy a curry at the weekend, you’ll have to try this out.

Great food at The Green Hen, Dublin

Green Hen Dublin Entrance - Pikalily Food Travel Blog

A few weeks ago we travelled to Dublin to spend a night with friends and do a little sightseeing.  We’ve been to Dublin on a number of occasions and are no strangers to the city, but one thing we haven’t really explored enough is the real food side of Dublin.  This changed on our recent trip and we can’t wait to get back down to visit some of the great eateries that have been recommended to us by fellow food bloggers.  We’ve seen plenty of Dublin city including the Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery, so now it’s time to explore it’s food culture.  We picked the brain of two of our friends for a nice restaurant in the city centre and we were pointed in the direction of The Green Hen.

Quick and easy banana donuts

Homemade banana donuts - Pikalily Food Blog

We had a bunch of ripe bananas sitting in the kitchen so we decided to take some inspiration from the latest Great British Bake Off show by creating over very own flavoured donuts.  This recipe isn’t a traditional donut recipe, however the result is a light and fluffy, moreish donut that takes minutes to prepare.  A great way to use up ripe bananas and a treat that all the family can enjoy.  If you have kids this will be a great recipe to cook with them – who doesn’t like donuts 🙂

Blog Awards Ireland Best Food Blog - Pikalily Food Blog

Following a hectic weekend we finally get the chance to sit down and share some good news with you – we’re finalists in the Blog Awards Ireland 2014.  We were previously shortlisted for best new blog and best food blog and having only been up and running since January 2014 we were just happy to be in those shortlists.  We never imagined making the finalist list but we have done just that, and even more surprisingly was the fact we have been listed as a finalist in the best food blog category.

An Evening of Fine Dining at Brunel’s Newcastle

Brunel's Restaurant Newcastle - Pikalily Food Blog

We’ve often highlighted how fortunate we are to live in Newcastle and around the Mourne’s, an area that is thriving in terms of it’s culinary scene, and the latest restaurant to get people talking around Newcastle in Brunel’s Restaurant.  Head chef Paul Cunningham has worked in a number of local and national eateries and we had heard a lot of positive things about Brunel’s, so we couldn’t wait to get along to try out the food for ourselves.  Located above the popular Anchor Bar, there is ample parking in the nearby Donard Car Park should you wish to visit Brunel’s.  We decided to book a table for a Friday night and call in to see what all the buzz was about.

The Guinness Storehouse – A must see in Dublin

Guinness Storehouse Dublin - Pikalily Food Travel Blog

It’s was the most popular tourist attraction in Ireland in 2013 and it’s easy to see why.  We’re talking about The Guinness Storehouse, the home of Ireland’s most famous export – the black stuff – Guinness.  We recently spent a day touring around Dublin and decided to get on the city bus tour, and top of our list of places to check in on was the Guinness Storehouse.  This was our second time at the Storehouse having previously visited last Christmas.  It’s fair to say it was a tad busier on this occasion as the Americans where in town to watch Penn State vs UCF in an American Football game at Croke Park.  We didn’t hang about, and set about enjoying this magnificent tourist attraction once again.

The taste of summer thanks to M&S

M and S Summer Flavour feast - Pikalily Food Blog

It was a case of better late than never as we only recently came across the M&S Summer of Flavour range.  Unfortunately our nearest Marks and Spencer’s is a good 45 minutes from our home but we called in recently to their Lisburn store when out for a day trip and were really impressed with some of the great produce on order, none more so than their Summer of Flavour range.  With such an awesome range of meat stirring back at us from the fridge, we just had to go get some!  Summer may be over, but the party can still continue with M&S (well at least until an even bigger party kicks off at Christmas).

Chorizo and Bacon Baked Potato Rosti

Chorizo Bacon Potato Rosti Recipe - Pikalily Food Blog

We recently added a new kitchen appliance to our ever growing collection of tools in the form of a Tefal Fresh Express Fruit and Veg Slicer.  We tested it once we got it with some apples as we couldn’t wait to get trying out the 4 attachments – 1 that slices, 1 that grates and 2 that shred.  We were instantly impressed and have since been putting it to good use in the kitchen, none more so than our recent potato rosti creation which we are going to talk about today.
