Duck a l’orange with honey glazed chips

Duck a lorange with honey glaze chips - Pikalily food blog

Duck really is one of our favourites and it’s important to ensure you get a real quality piece of duck when cooking this particular type of poultry.  When it comes to finding quality duck in a supermarket, it’s hard to look past Gressingham duck.  Gressingham have a great variety of duck recipes as well as recipes for other poultry including turkey and goose.  Regulars to the blog will know that we enjoy duck, especially when we dine.  Duck a l’orange is a classic dish and taking inspiration from one of Glessingham’s own recipes we put a bit of a twist on this classic dish.  Here is our duck a l’orange with honey and thyme glazed chips.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day with M&S

Valentine's Day meal deal M and S - Pikalily Food blog

We enjoy nothing more than rustling up a nice meal or doing some baking in the kitchen, but every so often it’s nice to treat yourself and have a bit of a lazy one.  While this may often mean eating out at a restaurant or grabbing something from your local takeaway, you can also have a lazy one by dining in.  Supermarkets are continuously trying to outdo each other in their meal deals for two, and tonight we spotted a great deal in M&S that we just had to grab and enjoy.  It was the M&S Valentine’s Day meal deal offer.  So this weekend, forget about paying over the odds for a table at your local restaurant (although there’s nothing wrong with that), and head to M&S and check out their meal deals; you’ll certainly be impressed.

Great food at The Green Hen, Dublin

Green Hen Dublin Entrance - Pikalily Food Travel Blog

A few weeks ago we travelled to Dublin to spend a night with friends and do a little sightseeing.  We’ve been to Dublin on a number of occasions and are no strangers to the city, but one thing we haven’t really explored enough is the real food side of Dublin.  This changed on our recent trip and we can’t wait to get back down to visit some of the great eateries that have been recommended to us by fellow food bloggers.  We’ve seen plenty of Dublin city including the Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery, so now it’s time to explore it’s food culture.  We picked the brain of two of our friends for a nice restaurant in the city centre and we were pointed in the direction of The Green Hen.

An Evening of Fine Dining at Brunel’s Newcastle

Brunel's Restaurant Newcastle - Pikalily Food Blog

We’ve often highlighted how fortunate we are to live in Newcastle and around the Mourne’s, an area that is thriving in terms of it’s culinary scene, and the latest restaurant to get people talking around Newcastle in Brunel’s Restaurant.  Head chef Paul Cunningham has worked in a number of local and national eateries and we had heard a lot of positive things about Brunel’s, so we couldn’t wait to get along to try out the food for ourselves.  Located above the popular Anchor Bar, there is ample parking in the nearby Donard Car Park should you wish to visit Brunel’s.  We decided to book a table for a Friday night and call in to see what all the buzz was about.

Lunch at Vanilla Restaurant, Newcastle

Vanilla restaurant newcastle review - Pikalily food blog

A few weeks back we went along to one of Newcastle’s most popular restaurants, Vanilla.  Owned and run by award winning chef Darren Ireland, Vanilla offers a great lunch menu at a reasonable price.  We’ve been a few times before and have always been very impressed, although we have never ventured in for a spot of lunch.  With a lunchtime special deal on 2 courses, we decided that a main and dessert was the only way to go.  Visiting Vanilla for a spot of lunch offers a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience, that is topped of with some excellent food.

Dinner at the Apartment Belfast

Apartment bar Belfast food review - Pikalily food blog

Our latest was to the Apartment bar in Belfast where we called in for a bite of dinner after an evening of shopping in Belfast’s city centre.  The Apartment has won many awards, including the ‘Bar of the Decade’ at the 2010 FATE Awards.  It had been a while since either of us had been in the Apartment and on first impression we were left a little disappointed by the shabby interior, which is now beginning to show its age.  The bar was pretty busy but we managed to get a table for two, albeit, not the most comfortable.  Despite these initial impressions, the menu looked good and both the food and cocktails were reasonably priced.  We placed an order for a crispy duck confit and steak and chips, along with two soft drinks.
