Ideas For A UK Summer Break

Harbour Inishowen - Pikalily Blog

The summer holidays are fast approaching and many of us are making plans to get away and enjoy some well-earned time off. If you’re hoping to organise a break this summer, and you’re keen to explore the UK, here are some fabulous ideas.

City breaks

City breaks are perfect for meeting up with friends and enjoying quality time with the family. When you visit a city, you can plan an itinerary packed with fun activities and cultural experiences. See the sights, soak up the atmosphere and learn new things along the way.

Visit London to catch a show in the West End or embark upon a tour of galleries or museums, or embrace your love of music or sport in Manchester. If you’re staying in the city centre, you can make use of minibus taxis in Manchester to visit Old Trafford or the Etihad or dance around at family-friendly concerts and festivals.

Nearby Liverpool is an excellent choice for football fans, as well as those who want to combine sightseeing with sunbathing. The city is just a hop, skip and a jump away from beautiful beaches, including Formby, Crosby and New Brighton. Other popular options include the historic cities of York, Chester, Durham, Oxford and Bath and the bustling cities of Newcastle, Bristol, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

Seaside holidays

Nothing beats a trip to the seaside, although living along the coast in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, we’re a bit biased here 🙂 ! Although we don’t always have reliable weather or wall-to-wall sunshine in the summer, the UK boasts some stunning beaches and a host of traditional seaside resorts.

From Bohemian, laid-back Brighton in the South to the neon lights of Blackpool in the North, there’s something for everyone. In Northern Ireland there’s the stunning Mourne Coastal Route or the Causeway Coast & Glens to peak your interest.

Holiday parks in Devon and Cornwall are among the most popular locations for beach breaks but you can also enjoy incredible holidays in Dorset, Norfolk, Northumberland, the Scottish islands and the Welsh coastline.

Think about the kind of holiday you want to enjoy. If you’re all about rides and candy floss and fun at the fair, opt for destinations such as Brighton, Blackpool, Skegness and Minehead.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing break, visit Bamburgh, Pembrokeshire, Lytham St Annes or Cornwall.

Camping and outdoor adventures

Many of us have fond memories of camping trips and adventures in the great outdoors. If you’re looking to take the kids to national parks or beauty spots and try out activities and explore mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes and forests, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

From the Lake District and the Peak District to Dartmoor, Snowdonia and the Yorkshire Dales, there are endless acres to discover. You can choose to camp, go glamping or stay in a B&B, a log cabin or a luxury hotel close to the action.

Castlewellan and Rostrevor are two places on our doorstep here in County Down, and both offering great walks, biking trails and camping and family activities to enjoy!

Enjoy your holidays!

The summer holidays are on the horizon and the sun is starting to appear more frequently. If you’re hoping to get away and you’re looking for UK destinations, hopefully, this article has given you some ideas.

Whether you’re keen to hit the beach, tour sights and attractions or enjoy the great outdoors, there are plenty of amazing options to consider.

For team Pikalily it’s the south of Ireland this summer as we head for Counties Kildare, Wicklow and Laois for a mini family break. We can’t wait 🙂

Until next time, safe travels.
