Fantastic Food at Hugh McCann’s, Newcastle

Review of Hugh McCanns Pub Newcastle - Pikalily Food Travel Blog

We are very fortunate in Newcastle to have so many great places to eat, with Hugh McCann’s being one of them.  With uninterrupted views of the promenade and the beach, Hugh McCann’s is a prime spot to visit.  We called in on a recent Friday night for a bite to eat and we were so impressed with the flavour, presentation and service.  The Friday night menu offers two courses and a glass of wine for £14.95 which is great value and the perfect way to start the weekend or relax after a hard week’s work.  Here’s a rundown of the food we enjoyed at Hugh McCann’s.

A day exploring our home town, Newcastle

Mourne Mountains Newcastle - Pikalily Food Travel Blog

Followers of our blog will know that we’re big fans of travelling, whether it’s around Ireland or European City breaks, we like to get away for a few days and explore new surroundings.  In 2015 alone we visited Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Valencia, Brighton, Manchester and various spots around Ireland.  While it’s great to get away for a few days, sometimes there’s just simply no place like home, and in Newcastle that is exactly the case.

An Evening of Fine Dining at Brunel’s Newcastle

Brunel's Restaurant Newcastle - Pikalily Food Blog

We’ve often highlighted how fortunate we are to live in Newcastle and around the Mourne’s, an area that is thriving in terms of it’s culinary scene, and the latest restaurant to get people talking around Newcastle in Brunel’s Restaurant.  Head chef Paul Cunningham has worked in a number of local and national eateries and we had heard a lot of positive things about Brunel’s, so we couldn’t wait to get along to try out the food for ourselves.  Located above the popular Anchor Bar, there is ample parking in the nearby Donard Car Park should you wish to visit Brunel’s.  We decided to book a table for a Friday night and call in to see what all the buzz was about.

Newcastle Festival of Flight Proves Roaring Success

Festival of Flight Newcastle - Pikalily Food Travel Blog

In what has become a bit of a summer tradition for us, we took the very short trip to the Harbour House Inn in Newcastle to enjoy the BA Aerospace Festival of Flight.  We always like to get down to the Harbour Inn early to ensure we get the very best seats in the beer garden to enjoy the best views of the air display overhead.  As we live just a few minutes up the road from the harbour, we have been lucky in recent years to always get a good seat, and this year was no different.  With the air show kicking off at 2pm and the highlight of the day being the display from the Red Arrows, here’s a few snaps of what turned out to be a great day.

Weekend dinner review at Maghera Inn

Maghera Inn review Newcastle - Pikalily food blog

Living in Newcastle, Co Down, provides us with many great pubs and restaurants to dine out in, and among our favourites is the Maghera Inn, which is located in the small village of Maghera, between Newcastle and Castlewellan.  The Maghera Inn is a small country pub which has built up quite a reputation both locally and nationally here in Northern Ireland in recent years for it’s food.  Having been voted the 2007 pub of the year and 2nd in 2009 food pub of the year, the Maghera Inn certainly has the awards to back up this great reputation.  A popular place for locals and visitors to the area, their is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere in this pub.  The cosy surroundings make it a great location to enjoy pub grub whether you are with family and friends or seeking a romantic meal for two.

Lunch at Vanilla Restaurant, Newcastle

Vanilla restaurant newcastle review - Pikalily food blog

A few weeks back we went along to one of Newcastle’s most popular restaurants, Vanilla.  Owned and run by award winning chef Darren Ireland, Vanilla offers a great lunch menu at a reasonable price.  We’ve been a few times before and have always been very impressed, although we have never ventured in for a spot of lunch.  With a lunchtime special deal on 2 courses, we decided that a main and dessert was the only way to go.  Visiting Vanilla for a spot of lunch offers a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience, that is topped of with some excellent food.

Lunch at Percy French, Newcastle

Percy French Newcastle lunch - Pikalily food blog

A favourite culinary haunt of ours, and the place where we shared our first date; the Percy French restaurant in Newcastle is a must visit for anyone visiting the area of Newry and Mourne for a day out or weekend break.  The restaurant sits at the entry to the majestic Slieve Donard Hotel and is part of the Hastings Group, one of the largest hotel groups in Northern Ireland.  We regularly visit the Percy French for lunch and dinner, and thought we would share with you our recent visit to the restaurant.
